Recover the Historical Memory of Bizkaia: The Testimonies of the Spanish Civil War Bombings
The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) left its mark on the history of Spain, and in Bizkaia, the bombings were one of the most devastating tragedies. In order to recover and preserve the historical memory of this territory, the project led by director Egoitz Rodríguez Olea gathers the testimonies of fifty people who experienced first-hand the bombings suffered during that period of conflict.
The Testimony of Survivors: A Real Look at History
The main objective of the project is, as Rodríguez Olea explains, to demonstrate that the reality of the bombings went far beyond Gernika. Although the city of Gernika is known worldwide for the brutality of its air raids, Bizkaia suffered other equally devastating bombings in different locations, whose stories, until now, had remained in the shadows.
This work gives voice to the testimonies of people who witnessed these air raids, providing a more complete and lesser-known vision of the horrors of war. The memory of those who lived through the fear and devastation is crucial to understanding the impact of the war on individuals and Basque society in general.
A Project for the Recovery of Historical Memory
The project aims to preserve and transmit the historical legacy of the inhabitants of Bizkaia who suffered the bombings. In addition, it seeks to raise awareness among the new generations about the importance of remembering these events, to avoid their repetition and to ensure that the historical memory remains alive.
